  • Spring 2014 Teen Driver Clinics

“Killing Cones To Make Safer Drivers”

The ALSCCA is proud to conduct several Teen Driver Clinics each year. These are one-day, hands-on, behind-the-wheel collision avoidance and defensive driving clinics that teach new teen drivers the skills needed to avoid vehicle incidents.

Using the students' own vehicle, the maneuvers practiced begin with simple elements and grow step-by-step to combine emergency braking and turning while staying in control of themselves and their vehicles.

Classroom sessions emphasize the theory behind the practice, but it is the practice on pavement that makes the clinics effective. Training in how to react as a driver follows the same principle as that used in training for sports - practice the right emergency responses so they can be used when the emergencies occur.

The Spring 2014 clinics will be held on May 10th, May 17th, and June 7th, all at the South Campus of Gardendale First Baptist Church.

Reguirements include: driver's license or learner's permit, valid insurance card/certificate, parent or guardian on-site, and the vehicle you will be driving regularly.

    Documents for prospective students:

Click here for information if you would like to host a clinic at your location.

Please email  if you would like additional information.

  • Solo Points 1 event Success

It was a great start to the 2013 Solo season.  March 9 turned out to be an incredible day, both in numbers of participants and weather.  Starting out at a cool 49 degrees, by mid afternoon we had partly cloudy skies with a spring-like 71 degrees.  It was utterly fantastic!!!  We had 85 participants at this event, which is great.  The novice crowd was huge, which is always great to see.

The Raw times were topped by Jordan Taylor, of Wayne Taylor Corvette Racing, in the FSAE car owned by Charlie Ping.  Charlie came in 3rd place overall, with Brandon Davis splitting up the two FSAE drivers in his "wife's" Z06.  It was great fun having Jordan out to his first ever autocross, and we hope that he is able to come back and join us again.  The top PAX times were headed up by Brandon Davis, with Dennis Sparks in second, and Lyle Cain in third.  I think Lyle and Mike Cavanaugh will have some competition in the Spring Super Solo Shootout this year.

The top 10 places in PAX were covered by 0.931 seconds.  I want to thank Robert Russom RealtySouth for providing the RAW/PAX Challenge payout at this event, and for stepping up to sponsor the entire Solo year of 2013.  Element Garage will be sponsoring the next RAW/PAX Challenge on March 30, while Bike Link will be the sponsor for our May event.

We are looking forward to building on this event, and making 2013 a fantastic and challenging year for solo.  Good luck to all our competitors heading to the Dixie Challenge event this fast, dodge cones.  And good luck to Jordan Taylor at Sebring this weekend.

  • 2013 Points 1 Solo event

The 1st points Event of the Solo (autocross) season is coming up this weekend.  March 9, Saturday, will be the start of our 11 event Championship.  This year we are fortunate to have sponsors stepping up to provide Challenge payouts at each event, as well as the end of the year.

The Raw/Pax Challenge for Points 1 is being brought to you by Robert Russom, The Racing Realtor.  Robert will be in attendance at the event and will be happy to talk to you about any real estate questions that you may have.  In the meantime, please visit Robert's website, for all of his updated listings.

We look forward to seeing you all at this years events.

  • 2013 Labor Day Race to return to Barber!

This just in!  The ALSCCA will once again be racing at Barber Motorsports Park on Labor Day Weekend.  This year we have formed a new partnership with the Tennessee Valley Region and the format will be different from last year's event.  We will be running a double Regional club race AND a Time Trial on August 31 to September 1, 2013.  A time trial has never held at Barber by our club, and we felt that the timing couldn't be better.  We are pleased to offer this exciting track to racer's all across the southeast and we hope to be able to continue this tradition with your continued support.

We are hard at work developing the schedule and pricing for this event, but mark your calendars because we plan to make this event our best one yet.  Be on the lookout in the forums for more information as it becomes available to us!

  • Solo Pass and Test n Tune

The Solo Season Pass is now available for purchase on the Axware Software ALSCCA Clubstore, linked here.  It will also be available for purchase via cash/card at the first 4 events of the Season.  The Solo Season Pass will give you access to all Open Test n Tunes (2 planned for 2013 so far) and all 11 Solo Events, for $250.

The Winter Test n Tune registrations are now available on Axware ORM.  The Saturday Test n Tune is open to everyone and is $30 for members who register online, $40 for non members who register online.  Members who show up at the gate to register will pay $35, non members will pay $45.  If you register online, you do not have to pay online, you can still show up and pay $30 or $40, but we are looking to get everyone to register online so we can have a better idea of how many people are planning to come to our events.

  • PBOC and ALSCCA at Barber

Many of you may know, some of you may not, but ALSCCA will be joining forces with PBOC (Porsche and BMW Owners Club) for a track weekend at Barber Motorsports Park on November 17-18th, 2012. ALSCCA will be running an AutoX in the parking lot both days while PBOC will be having a DE, TT, and Race on the track. This will be our second year to do it with them and hope to have an even better event than last year. Just ask anyone who came and they'll tell you it was a blast. We ho
pe that many of you will come out and run the AutoX course and have heard that some of you are already making plans and coming one and/or both days. If you'd like more info on times, cost, etc, check out the following link....

But if you're looking to get on track and run the DE, you're more than welcome to do that with PBOC (you do not have to own a Porsche or BMW to run at their event). They are a great club to run with, very professional, and run as safe an event as SCCA does. They run many of the same rules in the DE as SCCA does with the PDX. You don't have to have any on-track experience to run in the DE as they will provide great instructors to assist you, such as our very own Ricky Ragan!!! Cost of the DE is $425 for both Sat and Sun, or $300 for only Sat OR Sun.

  • TGPR "NO FRILLS" Time Trial

The No Frills Time Trial event is scheduled for the 27th and 28th of October.  This is the next event on our schedule and we are looking forward to seeing you at the event.  We will not only have the pen-ultimate Time Trial event of the championship for 2012, we are also having a PDX with Novice and Advanced groups.  This is a lot of track time for the money.  You won't find a better event to participate in during the Halloween season.

Full entry for the PDX is $250 - there are options of if you work the TT and run the PDX it is $100 for one day. Single day PDX (with no work) is $150. And if you instruct at the PDX and drive the PDX for 2 days it is $100 (instructor run group).
If you are running the TT it is $250 - if you instruct in the PDX and run the TT it is $100 (that will be a busy person).
Lots of options still a fun time, as always with this event.

  • September 29, 2012 Teen Driver Clinic is in the books!

Our fall 2012 Teen Driver Clinics got off to a great start on Saturday, September 29th. The class was a little smaller than usual, but that just meant the 7 pairs of students and parents got some additional attempts at our exercises and we were finished by about 3:15pm...just ahead of the rain. 9 volunteers, including 2 first timers, were invaluable as they set up the exercises, provided instruction & feedback, and basically insured the day went off without a hitch.

I received the following feedback from one of the Sep 29th parents:

"My son and I had the pleasure of attending the SCCA teen driving school yesterday.  We were both blown away by every aspect of the school.  I've been to a car control course at Bob Bondurant's school in Arizona and I can truly say that the classroom and driving sessions yesterday were every bit as good -- if not better -- than what I experienced there.  My son's confidence level is much higher and we both now know what our car is capable of doing and what happens as you approach its limits.  Not the least important, we both had a blast!

Among the many things that were fantastic were the enthusiasm and extremely positive and nurturing attitude of the instructors.  It was easy for me to tell that you all do this because you love it, and because you want to help young drivers get the skills they need.

As you requested, I will write both Dr. Hamm and Mr. Allen at the church and tell them how much I value this course and the service that you and other SCCA members are providing to the community.

Thanks again for a great program."

Some space remains in the October 20th and November 3rd. For more information please see the Teen Driver Clinic section of this website or email

  • Upcoming events and news

We are coming into the Fall season, and many of our local and regional championships are wrapping up.  But that doesn't mean we don't still have events for you to get your driving fix.

Coming up this weekend we have the first Teen Driving Clinic of the season, and it is a great way for you to pass your experiences along to the up and coming drivers that we will be soon sharing the road.  Everyone is welcome, and please contact Rod Hardiman, or visit the Teen Driving Clinic page.

We have several members of our club that will be traveling to Robbinsville, North Carolina this weekend to participate in the third Chasing the Dragon hill-climb event.  Live Timing is a new addition to the event, please check out the Chasing the Dragon webpage for more information.

The Alabama and TVR regions are also hosting the "No Frills" Time Trial and PDX event Halloween weekend in October.  This event will be held at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway, and is sure to be a great event.  The event plans to be the second to last TT event for the season, and may end up deciding championships for many drivers in the SouthEast Division.  We are always looking for help from our members, or members' friends and family.  We need volunteers to man the flagging stations, and help with all sorts of stations around the track.  Don't think for a minute that you need experience to do this.  We have a number of experienced workers that will be helping you all weekend long.  This is a great way to experience some of the fastest cars in the southeast looking to set the ultimate fast lap.  This is not racing, this is ALL OUT SPEED!  If you are looking to take your car out of the autocross circuit or off the road and experience first hand driving on a track, then the PDX is for you.  Please visit our forum or Time Trial page to learn more about the options you have.

We look forward to seeing you all over the next month at some or all of our events.

  • Flagging my first club race

This weekend was my first venture in to flagging a club race. I have worked F&C at TGPR time trial events before, and had even managed to drag my wife along in the past. We enjoyed those events, but they were not club races. We decided to help out at Barber this past weekend, and it was great.

Flagging at TGPR is laid back. From most any station you can see 80% of the track. The cars are spread out as many competitors want the most distance between them and the next driver to wring out their best lap times. You know what's coming and how you should deal with it.

Barber is different. You can see only your corner, and maybe the approaching straightaway. The cars show up and disappear in an instant, inches from one another. These guys aren't slowing down to open up a gap ... they are pushing 100% every inch of every lap.

The F&C volunteers are the only signal these drivers have of what lies around the next corner.

I'll admit, it was a little unnerving to hop in to this kind of situation. One where you can't quite grasp the importance of your position until the instant you throw the flag that prevents a crash. However, once that happens, you completely understand the role you play and why you are one of the most important people at the track that weekend. You're not here for free lunch and a sweet spectator position. This is serious.

If you have considered working races, please do yourself a favor and sign up for the next one you can make. The experience is truly exhilarating and rewarding. It will be a weekend to remember. A weekend where you know you were the person that made the race a success.

I hope to see you at a flagging station soon!

  • Labor Day Race Update

Day one is in the books and wow was it successful!  Everyone was on their A game today, so much so that we were able to give the drivers an extra 5 minutes of qualifying time at the end of the day!  Sure there was some rain mixed in, but all in all it was a great day for racing!

If you can't make it out but want to keep up with what's going on, stop on by Live Timing and check out who's running fast laps and listen in on the live stream with our totally amazingly awesome announcers Brian Wilson and Michael Cholewa.

Hopefully though you'll be able to come out and see what club racing is all about.  Just flash your SCCA member card at registration (where the white Porsche is), sign the waiver, and come on in.  Admission is FREE to club members!

We hope to see you all out there this weekend.

  • It's almost time for racing!

We just wanted to throw out some quick news to those who will be working/driving the event this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.

At last count, we have 166 drivers representing thirteen states attending this year's event.  We even have a few drivers that are coming all the way from California just to be here with us this weekend!  There are also 88 men and woman signed up to make sure this event goes successfully and without them I assure you we could not go green.  We appreciate all of the support!

If you are attending the Saturday night social at the track, we have decided to make it a BYOB meal.  This was mainly because of concerns of Hurricane Issac and also about making sure we are at least profitable after this years event.  I am however happy to announce that the box lunches will no longer be including Kaiser Rolls for bread!  You will have a choice between wheat and white sandwich bread this year.

The social will include a prime rib carving station, served with an array of soft serve crusty rolls with Au Jus and Horseradish Dill Sauce, chicken fingers with sweet and sour and honey mustard sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley, tossed salad, and assorted pie slices!  We had the prime rib last year and it was amazing.

Some notable local club IT drivers to be looking out for at the track this weekend is Chuck Baddar, John Waight, Stephen Patterson, Clayton Pannell, and Richard Pannell.

    See you at the track!

  • Points 7 Solo recap

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Points 7 Solo event at Oak Mountain Amphitheater on Sunday, August 19th.  It was quite a full day of work, fun, and weather.  We started the day off with, in my opinion as Co-chair, a terrible start.  When you see myself, and John Waight, doing registration and Cashier, you know that terrible things are happening.  Mark was out designing his course, with the help of a Safety steward who showed up early, and a Novice (that is what we like to see).  So I was in the trailer trying to thumb my way through registration and cashier.  Luckily John Waight held pity on me, and decided he would help out (probably because I snapped at a few people, and he was trying to make sure I didn't come out of the trailer and destroy the computers on the way).  I apologize if I snapped at any of you, it was quite an experience handling all of that on my own, the definition of trial by fire.  The good thing is, we have loads of great people that step up when needed, and everything else gotten taken care of on the course, in paddock, and in Tech.

On to the late start, and wonderful morning weather.  We really couldn't have asked for a better morning of weather for autocross.  After our last three events, and several events in TVR being unbelievably hot, we finally had some nice 80 degree southern weather.  We battled the mud, and "rally" section of our autocross course with flying colors.  The afternoon, that was a different story.  We saw the rain coming, literally.  We had two cars on course that had a SpaFrancorchamps like experience.  Dry at start, wet on the sweeper, dry at the finish.  From then on, it was wet but drying for the first run group, and then a full wet experience for the second run group.  Personally, I enjoy driving in the rain, it makes the experience complete.  It is amazing the grip you can get in the rain!

John Waight ended the day on top with Fastest Time of the Day at a 31.1.  Dennis Sparks and his crew were flying in the RX-8.  And Jerry Ledford once again walked away with the Novice class.  Videos of many of the runs are in the message board.

See ya at the Labor Day race!

  • Autocross Points 6 In Review

On Sunday July 29 the ALSCCA held Points 6 of 10 for our 2012 Solo season.  After a week full of rain and storms, we had a weekend that was almost unbearable.  John Waight said it best, "I stopped by the Convenience Store this morning and the sign said 85 degrees and 94% humidity"  and that was at 7:45 in the morning.  Needless to say it was going to be a hot one.  Nick Vagner was back at the helm designing the course.  It looked like it was going to be a super fast course during the walk-through.  I heard chatter about "drag launch, drag start, no brakes till the 3rd feature" all morning long.  This had the paddock in a buzz.

We had a good showing of 61 drivers, even with several regulars at other National events, and our normal loss of those that just can't stand the heat.  By the 4th or 5th car through the finish gates, suddenly the vibe had changed.  The course was not what people had expected.  Nick had managed to create a very technical course, that was also very fast.  It took everyone by surprise.  Times were hovering in the 50.0 to 52.0 sec range for the majority of the morning.  Finally on the last run of the first group, Sara Tongsuvone broke the streak and put down a 49 sec run.  By the end of the morning, just before lunch, FTD was sitting in the low 49 sec range and looked like it was going to be a fight between John Waight, Brandon Davis, and Sara Tongsuvone.  There was definitely a fight to be had at the end of the day, but Brandon Davis ended up bringing a gun to a knife fight, when he pulled up to the line with sticker Hoosier tires.  The first run he laid down was a 47.1, with a cone.  Everyone knew that the time was there, he just had to clean it up.    The next run was a 47.0, clean, and it was done.  Brandon had once again walked away with FTD, as well as top PAX.

We look forward to a bit of a break, after 3 events in one month.  Our next event is planned for August 19th, we hope to see you there.

  • Autocross Points 5 Wrap-Up

On Sunday July 15th we had the Points 5 event of our 2012 season for Solo (autocross).  The events weather was a welcome change to the North vs South event that was the last weekend of June.  Although the summers are blistering hot here in the south, we try to keep the events steady.  Points 5 was the second event in 2 weeks and the middle event of a 3 event/4 week push that we are trying to accomplish in June and July.

We had several of our regulars MIA for this event, including those that generally register and run timing.  This could have been a nightmare for us, but we have great club members that stepped up and our Timing system ran with minimal issues through out the day.  Our registration went flawless and we are having an increase in the revenue stream with online payments and debit/credit card payments on site.

The event saw 65 registered drivers, but due to some breaking and some DNF'ing all their runs, only 53 drivers posted times.  We had 25 different classes represented, and our Novice group had 10 drivers.  Jerry Ledford was at the top of the Novice board in his STX 24 BMW 325i.  His fastest run was his final run with a 37.042 raw time (30.448 PAX).  That actually ended up putting Jerry at the top spot for PAX runners from the Alabama region.  The Fastest Time of the Day (FTD) was set by TVR's Brandon Davis in his "wife's Mothers Day present" ZO6 at a 34.693.  The Fastest Pax Time was also set by a TVR member, Dennis Sparks, in his STX Mazda RX8 at a 29.278 PAX time (35.619 Raw time).  The complete listing of times can be found on our Axware page here, and you must be logged in to see the times.

Our next event is going to be Points 6 on July 29th at the Oak Mountain Amphitheater. See ya then.
