When brothers Jeff and Bret Huey started roasting coffee as a hobby from their garage in 2010, they never imagined how their humble operation would take off. As the requests for their coffee increased, they expanded into the break room of a real estate office on Oxmoor Road in West Homewood. The rest, as they say, is history. Seeds Coffee Company was born.

With the help of three business partners and many friends, they jumped at the opportunity to have their own coffee shop space when the building next door was vacated. “The rent was low, and we opened as the first place in this overlooked part of Homewood where you could get specialty food and coffee. The neighborhood quickly adopted us. We were like “Cheers” for them,” said co-owner Jeff Huey.

The shop featured a minimalist buildout at first, most of it done by hand. ALSCCA member Jim Farris was one of Seeds’ first supporters, helping to build dining tables for the shop from reclaimed wood and working the coffee roaster. “It was definitely a humble beginning, but we have always been resilient and willing to put in the hard work,” added Huey.

Fast forward to today and Seeds Coffee is a bustling space filled with positive energy. “We value people. You’ll feel like you are taken care of. The neighborhood embraced us and grew up around us, and now we’re a destination for great coffee. Our presence here has helped anchor this community. West Homewood is a great area for families, it’s highly walkable, and you’ll also see a diversity of churches here, strollers, young families and we fit in really well here,” Huey said.

With their steady growth, Seeds Coffee has expanded into importing raw, green coffee beans directly from the farmers in Guatemala, Indonesia and Colombia. They supply other local specialty coffee retailers in the Birmingham area with their selected green coffee beans. This really sets Seeds Coffee apart, along with their creative seasonal drinks. “We’ve formed relationships with our farmers so you can know exactly where your cup of coffee is coming from,” said Huey.

To enjoy the best at Seeds, Jeff Huey recommends you try their Iron Fist blend. It’s their most popular coffee and is grown in Colombia. It’s not too strong or too light in taste, but lands in the middle for depth of flavor. Seeds Coffee sells Iron Fist blend by the cup at their shop, or by the bag, which you can order from their website or as part of their new coffee subscription service.

Winter seasonal flavors like Gingerbread or Peppermint Mocha are also drink favorites at Seeds. Jeff Huey prefers the simplicity and purity of a time-tested pour-over cup of black coffee.

With Seeds Coffee’s new coffee subscription service, you can have their freshly roasted and quality-controlled beans and blends delivered directly to your door. When enjoying any product from Seeds, be sure to thank them for their continued sponsorship and support of the ALSCCA. We look forward to hosting Seeds Coffee at a few of our events in 2024 to provide a different kind of “high quality fuel” to help us power through!
